Listed below are contributing findings that I came across during my research. These guidelines, along with my mentor's responses and student feedback, make the "answer" to my essential question!
1. Look at Gender Differences- You have to appeal school to boys and girls in different ways!
There are four main topics of differences that you need to keep in mind when it comes to teaching boys versus girls. These are: brain-based, sensory-based, physical differences, and biological differences. To find out exactly what these mean, check my attached PowerPoint presentation (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1affbgelHwj4_nxKFZOPag19K-xSJ17voDuLf-GApycQ/edit?usp=sharing). In a nutshell, these varying characteristics translate to the following teaching strategies for females and males:
Girls- 1) Girls work well in groups when they are facing one another or the teacher. Find activities that allow them to help the teacher 2) Girls do not respond well to loud, sharp, short tones. They prefer softer voices. Girls enjoy tying lessons into emotions. 3) They respond to descriptive phrases. Loud, repetitive noise can be distracting and disturbing to girls. 4) Girls’ attention will focus on overheads or writing on the chalkboard. Use bright colors and puzzles to promote perceptual and symbolic learning.
Boys- 1) Be brief and involve them actively in the lesson. Cut down on written tasks and use models and rubrics they can follow. Challenge them with competition. 2) Keep a close eye on boys, but let them play 3) Lessons should be kinesthetic and experiential. Use a variety of manipulatives.
2) Tell Them Why it Matters- Tell your students why what you are teaching is important
3) Make it Fun- Plan a lesson that will interest them
4) Make It Relevant- Choose an activity that applies to their life
5) Give Them a Voice and a Choice- Ask them what activities they like best
6) Use Technology- It's being used everywhere, so make sure you use it in your classroom!
3. Tips for Teachers- These are characteristics kids look for in their teacher as a person and as a professional! If they love their teacher, then chances are they'll be more eager to learn.
Be a friendly, understanding, and calm person. Be fair when grading, and give equal attention to all students. Make learning interesting, be a good communicator, and motivate your kids.
