My Mentorship
As a junior in high school, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to actually explore and experience the career I have always dreamed of having. The closest I thought I would come to understanding just what being an elementary school teacher is all about was thinking of the times I was back in kindergarten through fifth grade. Honors Mentorship changed those limits. Every day of the school week, I travel to Lula Elementary for what is the best part of day. "Ms. Amber, Ms. Amber!" is the first thing I hear as the kids run to give me hugs when I walk through the classroom door.
For almost as long as I can remember, I've always had the aspiration to become a teacher. From the impact my teachers had on me to my love of children, I knew this was what I wanted to do. I yearn to learn more and more, and I want to put that same drive in young children at an early age. I want to make an impression on them that I care about what they learn and how they grow, just like a few significant teachers made on me. I want to see them dream big.
My mentor, Mrs. Reeves, is a first grade teacher at Lula Elementary who has kindly welcomed me into her classroom. She and her kids have both done a fantastic job at showing me how to be teacher. Whether it be from teaching a concept, helping with a math worksheet, or keeping the kids focused to guiding a little one on how to tie a shoe, I have come to learn what it means to be a teacher. They have shown me that a classroom is not just learning, but it's also love.
